Earlobe repair is a plastic surgery procedure that repairs and restores your earlobes. For torn earlobes, the procedure reconnects the earlobe. Dr. Rottman also treats stretched and elongated earlobes that are caused by heavy earrings and gauging.
If you are unhappy with the shape and size of your earlobes, or if you have injured your earlobes, we recommend earlobe repair. Dr. Rottman is able to use the existing soft tissue to restore the shape and size of your earlobes. We do, however, advise our patients that the earlobes may be smaller due to limited amounts of soft tissue and the extent of the injury.

Dr. Rottman examines your earlobes to determine the extent of repair necessary. For injuries, he may proceed with the surgery immediately after your consultation.
In other cases, he schedules an appointment for the procedure. Dr. Rottman will explain the procedure step by step, as well as the anticipated outcomes of your earlobe repair.
The procedure is performed in our office and requires only local anesthesia. If your earlobe repair is necessary because of a recent injury, and your earlobe has not healed, Dr. Rottman may be able to repair the lobe with sutures.
For stretched and gauged earlobes, or older injuries that have healed, Dr. Rottman will remove some of the soft tissue before he sutures your earlobes. The entire procedure takes less than one hour.
Your Guide to Post-Earlobe Repair Care
You may feel some minor throbbing and discomfort in your earlobes once the anesthesia wears off. Your earlobes may also be swollen and tender. These symptoms typically last only one to two days. Dr. Rottman advises you about the proper care needed after your earlobe repair. It is important that you keep the area clean. After about ten days, Dr. Rottman removes the stitches. After about six months, you can re-pierce your ears if desired.
In the case of earlobe repair from trauma and injury, your insurance may cover a portion of the cost, but you may be responsible for a co-payment, deductible, and co-insurance. Please check with your insurance carrier to verify coverage. In the case of earlobe repair due to stretching and gauging, these services are most likely not covered by your insurance. Symmetry is one of the most important aspects of earlobe repair.
