Kybella™ in Baltimore, MD

As the body ages, it processes fat less efficiently. Excess fat underneath the chin may make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable. Newly approved Kybella™ treatments by double board certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Steven J. Rottman dissolves excess fat to make the men and women of Baltimore look younger and feel more confident.

What is Kybella™?

Kybella™ is an injectable that mimics deoxycholic acid, a natural chemical that processes fat cells. Many people have excess fat stored underneath the chin but would prefer a sculpted, youthful look. Kybella™ targets and kills fat cells, eliminating these fat deposits and preventing the cells from re-appearing.

Until now, the only option for reducing excess fat underneath the chin was invasive surgeries such as neck lifts, lower face-lifts and liposuction.

Benefits of Kybella™

Kybella™ has several benefits:

  • Permanently eliminates fat cells that produce a “double chin”
  • Non-invasive procedure that replaces traditional surgeries
  • No downtime or recovery time after the procedure
  • Each treatment takes place in the office and in less than one hour

Does Kybella™ really work?

Recently, two American clinical trials included over 1,000 participants. Those who were given Kybella™ reported a noticeable reduction in fat beneath their chin over participants who were not. Kybella™ has been approved by the FDA as a safe, non-invasive alternative to surgery.

What should I expect from Kybella™ treatments?

Kybella™ treatment sessions are very similar to other injectable treatments such as BOTOX®, Juvederm® and Restylane®. An in-office procedure, and each Kybella™ session contains an average of 10 to 20 injections. Up to 50 injections may be needed for patients with severe double chin. The region will be photographed, marked and numbed before receiving any injections. Each in-office treatment session will take an estimated 20 to 30 minutes and can be scheduled a few weeks apart.

There may be some side effects, such as mild bruising, tenderness, bleeding and swelling. The treatment area may also feel firmer than other areas of your jaw line, chin, and neck. This is not unusual and generally does not last more than two to three days.

Dr. Rottman expects most patients will achieve optimal results with two to three sessions, though more can be scheduled if needed.

Is Kybella™ approved for use in other areas of body fat?

At this time, the FDA has only approved Kybella™ for use underneath the chin. It is not currently approved for any other use, for example, arm or belly fat. There is some evidence that it may help with small pockets of fat underneath the eyes. However, there are safety risks involved with other uses. Experts insist on further testing to determine if Kybella™ is suitable for uses other than double chin.

What is the cost for Kybella™?

Pricing for Kybella™ is determined based on the number of injections and treatment sessions required for optimal results. Kybella™ is similar to other dermal fillers and patients should expect a similar price range for treatments. It is unlikely that health insurance companies will cover the injections as Kybella™ is considered a cosmetic procedure.

Is Kybella™ the right choice for me?

Dr. Rottman recommends Kybella™ for patients who feel uncomfortable, embarrassed or unattractive as a result of a double chin. It is effective for both men and women who have excess fat stores underneath the chin.
