Breast Reduction in Baltimore, MD
While many women may be envious of large breasts, living with breasts that are too large for your body causes many emotional and physical concerns. Double board certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Steven J. Rottman offers breast reduction surgery to the women of Baltimore, MD, and surrounding communities.
What Is Breast Reduction?
Overly large breasts can leave you both emotionally and physically uncomfortable. The weight of excess breast tissue and the self-consciousness associated with having large breasts can impair your ability to lead an active and normal life. Breast reduction is performed to relieve pain resulting from too-large breasts and to create a breast size more in proportion with the rest of your body.
Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction not only helps improve the proportion of your breasts with your body, but also remedies many physical and emotional issues. Overly large breasts cause back and shoulder pain, as well as less self-confidence and embarrassment. Proper-fitting bras and clothing are also a challenge.

How Is Breast Reduction Performed?
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed through incisions on your breasts with surgical removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. Liposuction may also be used in conjunction with excision techniques to remove excess fat. The technique chosen by Dr. Rottman will be determined by your individual condition, breast composition, amount of reduction desired, and personal preferences. During the procedure Dr. Rottman will lift and shape the breast tissue to produce a better-proportioned contour. The nipple is then repositioned and, if necessary, enlarged nipples are reduced. The incision options include around the areola; a keyhole or racquet-shaped pattern, with an incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease; or an inverted T” or anchor-shaped incision pattern. Most of the incisions can be hidden along the natural contours of the breast to minimize their appearance after surgery; however, some may be visible on the breast surface.
Preparing for Breast Reduction
Pre-surgical preparation for your breast reduction surgery may involve some preliminary blood and diagnostic tests. Another aspect of breast reduction surgery you should consider is that your bras and clothing may not fit any more.
Recovery from Breast Reduction
After breast reduction, you may be given bandages or a support bra to help reduce swelling and to support your new, smaller breasts. The results can be seen immediately and as the swelling subsides, you should be able to enjoy your breast reduction even more. Incision lines are permanent but generally fade with time.
