Due to its ability to improve one’s self-image and confidence by contouring the body into a slimmer, shapelier figure, liposuction surgery has become the most popular type of cosmetic procedure in the United States. Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, reshapes and streamlines areas of the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, upper arms, chin, cheeks, and neck. Liposuction is not a substitute for healthy diet and exercise, however, it can eliminate stubborn areas of fat that don’t seem to respond to traditional weight-loss methods. Refinements to the procedure during the past decade have helped to provide more precise results and shorter recovery times.
Unfortunately, liposuction cannot address issues such as cellulite or sagging skin, therefore liposuction is often combined with other procedures to lift and tighten tissues or remove excess skin. Procedures that are commonly performed in conjunction with liposuction are face lifts, neck lifts, breast reductions and abdominoplasties.
During the liposuction procedure, a narrow tube or cannula is inserted through tiny incisions to break apart and vacuum the fat layer that lies beneath the skin. A vacuum pump or large syringe is then used to suction out the loosened fat.
Following your surgery it is normal to have some swelling and fluid retention. A small drainage tube may be inserted beneath the skin in order to prevent fluid-build up and a compression garment should be worn in order to reduce swelling. You will be able to see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body soon after your surgery and you will be able to fully enjoy your new, sleeker contours after about three months. The scars from liposuction are small and strategically placed to be hidden from view. Liposuction can permanently reduce your fatty tissue if you are committed to eat well and engage in physical activity. However, significant weight gain can reverse the results of the procedure.
