Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen, creating a more striking profile that you won’t want to hide behind baggy clothing.  A smooth, firm abdomen is restored through the removal of excess skin and fat and the tightening of weak or separated muscles. Good candidates for abdominoplasty are men and women who are in relatively good shape, but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that is unresponsive to diet and exercise.

The Procedure

During a tummy tuck, Dr. Rottman repairs the weakened or separated abdominal muscles to help strengthen the abdomen. Excess skin and fat are also removed to produce a more taut look. Another alternative is a ‘mini abdominoplasty’, where the incision is much shorter and the navel may not be moved.

Recovery

Abdominoplasty is major surgery and requires adequate recovery time. For the first few days, you will likely have some swelling in the area and discomfort, which can be controlled with medication. Although you may not be able to stand completely straight until your muscles have healed, it is recommended to try to start walking as soon as possible.

Light exercise can help to make you feel better and expedite your recovery. It may take several weeks to feel completely back to normal. Your scars will flatten out and lighten in color after several months. Abdominoplasty scars can usually be hidden under most clothing and bathing suits.
